Dan Colen

By themaven | January 11, 2009

To be titled, 2008 - Painting - Chewing gum on canvas - 60 x 94.5 inches

Dan Colen, a New York based artist, has been making an imprint on the world of contemporary art.  Colen finds interesting ways to approach a canvas. He has created abstract paintings using chewing gum, caked oil paint to resemble bird shit, and lipstick. An exhibition of his work is currently on display at the Gagosian Gallery in London.

The Rock-afire Explosion Movie

By themaven | January 10, 2009

In the 80s, Rock-afire Explosion was an animatronic house band stationed at Showbiz Pizza. Showbiz went out of business in the early 90s and was taken over by its successor, Chuck E. Cheese.  Chris Thrash, a 33 year old car salesman from a small town in Alabama, purchased the last working animatronic band.  He stores it in a shed in his backyard where he reprograms the band to play Top 40 hits like Usher’s “Love In This Club.”  A documentary entitled “The Rock-afire Explosion” will soon be released, exploring Thrash’s hobby and the Rock-afire fanbase.

Barack “Barry” Obama

By themaven | January 10, 2009

He rocked tight shades and was cool as a cucumber; not much has changed since then. These days, a similar look could only be captured through the lens of a Lomo camera after a trip to the Urban Outfitters sunglasses rack.

Mr. Hudson

By themaven | January 9, 2009

London native Mr. Hudson is a contributing member of Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. record label. Hudson’s solo album, “Now I See,” drops early 2009, but evidence of his soulful voice and electronic dance vibe can also be heard on Kanye West’s “808s & Heartbreak,” as Hudson is co-signed by Mr. West and also produced the song “Streetlights” off of “808s.” I’m looking forward to hearing his new album.

Get a head start on Mr. Hudson. Your favorite television drama will likely be using the first single “There Will Be Tears” in a season finale - one of those artistic slow-motion scenes where the main character gets shot and you’re left with many questions and six months without answers.

Free download of “There Will Be Tears” here.

Moscot Eyewear

By themaven | January 9, 2009

Moscot has been a New York institution for eyewear since 1913, offering a wide variety of classic styles.  The frames have a vintage feel and are modeled after those worn by the likes of Truman Capote, John Lennon, Malcolm X, and Andy Warhol.  The frames can be purchased at Moscot store locations or online.

I’m currently rocking the Moscot Lemtosh in tortoise shell.
