RUN DC

By themaven | January 24, 2009

OBEY’s Obama shirt is all the rage but this is by far my favorite.  RUN DC designed a shirt transforming Barack Obama into a member of legendary rap group Run DMC.  You can buy the shirt here.

By themaven | January 24, 2009

Fred Armisen is a comedian known for his work on Saturday Night Live.  In 1998, Armisen starred in a hilarious short film documenting SXSW, a spring music festival and conference that takes place in Austin, TX.  The film sparked Armisen’s transformation from drummer of the punk rock band Trenchmouth to comedian.  Check out the film for free here.

TomGreen.com: The Channel

By themaven | January 24, 2009

Tom Green has set up an independent Internet-based channel broadcasting from his living room In Los Angeles. The channel consists of “man on the street” segments and a live talk show format. Green communicates with fans all over the world during the live show via video Skype. Past guests have included Neil Hamburger, Steve-O, Norm MacDonald, and Bob Saget. As with anything Mr. Green produces (or is remotely involved with), absolutely anything goes. Check it out here.

Rives and Danny Hoch Poems on Def Poetry Jam

By missmaven | January 24, 2009

My name is missmaven, and this is my first post, as I usually perform backstage editing for themaven himself. I’ll give anything that combines poetry and hip-hop a second, third, or fourteenth look.

Def Poetry Jam is a television show featuring performance poetry from well-known hip hop artists and less-well known poets. One of Russell Simmons’ older projects, Def Poetry aired on HBO from 2002-2007, with a brief stint on Broadway. Though the show hasn’t seen much action in the past two years, the collection of Def Poetry Jam videos available on youtube.com will make you laugh, cry, and walk away from the computer wishing you could rhyme this well.

Two of missmaven’s favorites:

Danny Hoch’s post-9/11 commentary, “Corner Talk, September” and Rives’ “Sign Language”

Matt and Kim

By themaven | January 24, 2009

Matt and Kim are a Brooklyn-based punk/dance duo (full names: Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino). The song featured in this video is “Yea Yeah.”

This summer, I caught Matt and Kim at Vice Magazine’s “Tales of Colt 45″ Party at the Hideout in Chicago. It’s safe to say that you haven’t experienced Matt and Kim until you’ve seen them live. Audience members usually find their way onto the stage and an all-out dance party ensues.  Look here for Matt and Kim tour dates.
